〔G〕 〔Junko's journal〕

On June 8, I arrived in Brisbane, Australia and visited a language school there to loam English. My teacher recommended all the students in the classroom to write a journal about our experiences in Australia. She thought it's a good way to practice English (and I agree with her). My classmates were from a lot of different countries, such as China, Korea, Thailand and Egypt. They were all friendly, and all like me, were trying to improve their English. On our first weekend we went exploring around the city together. Everything about my new life was so exciting! I was really looking forward to my three-month stay. On July 29, I was starting to feel down. My English was improving, but I still had troubles understanding people outside the school. I was ordering a pizza last night and I had to ask the waiter two times to repeat what he said. I know this is natural. It is not easy to understand, everything in another language, but I felt frustrated at times. When I met my Japanese friends living here in Brisbane, they tried to encourage me not to give up. They said it's a natural part of learning another language.

  • 問46. Why did Junko start to write a journal in Australia? $\fbox{46}$
    • (1) She wanted to improve her English during her stay in Brisbane for three months.
    • (2) She thought it was good to understand everything in English.
    • (3) She got advice from Japanese friends who did the same things.
    • (4) She was asked by her teacher at her language school to write a journal.
  • 問47. Why did Junko feel frustrated in Australia? $\fbox{47}$
    • (1) She had difficulty writing a journal.
    • (2) She didn't feel confident in her English ability.
    • (3) She needed to start a journal in English.
    • (4) She needed to communicate with her classmates.

〔H〕 〔John's speech〕

What kind of animal gets to sleep in a bed, lies on the couch and rides in the family car? If you guess my dog Carly, then you are right. I'm going to talk a little about the breed of a Labrador as well as my Labrador Carly. Labradors came from Newfoundland, not Labrador. Labradors are known to be good-natured and friendly dogs. Labradors are often used for guide and rescue dog. Labradors like to hunt and swim. They're not guard dogs, though they do bark at people. Carly has been a member of our family for two and a half years. Carly is a black Labrador. My mom insisted we get a female dog because we already have four boys in our family. I remember when my mom first brought Carly home she was so small you could pick her up in one hand. It didn't take long for her to grow, though. You should see her now. She weighs about 80 pounds. Carly, like other Labradors, loves her food. She needs lots of exercise to keep fit. Carly loves to go for runs in the park. If you mention the word ‘walk’ to Carly, she'll immediately go and get her leash, and she won't leave you alone until you take her out. The worst thing about walking Carly is that you have to pick up her 'mess' when she goes to the bathroom. Carly can sometimes be a pain in the neck. She likes to take things from you especially after school when you first walk in the door. She'll take your hat, mitts and anything else you may have in your hand. She won't give it back until you trade her for a cookie! As I mentioned earlier, Carly has a passion for food. One time it was my brother's birthday. My mom bought a big chocolate cake and had left it in the kitchen in a box on the counter. We went out to run some errands and when we got back we found the cake box empty on the floor. Carly had eaten the whole cake. We were very mad with her, but things got worst. Carly got side. If you didn't know this before, dogs should not have chocolate. It is like poison to them. When Carly got sick from the cake, we had to take her to the vet to get some medicine. We were lucky she was all right. If you were looking for a great family pet, I would highly recommend a Labrador retriever.
